mangosteen
heartsafire asked:

I have a sister with stage 4 lung cancer. She was told Mangosteen Juice will bring back her energy. I would like to know the down side of this as all the information given to her was positive. Just wondering. Thanks

I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU SEARCH FOR “Dr Johanna Budwigs cancer diet and just as stongly look up or “Universal Energy Lodge” I’m sure either of these will save lives

  2. Panda Says:

It’s good for acne apparently. But if you are using it for cancer . . sorry . . there is no evidence that the juice is effective for cancer. Here is what the American Cancer Society has to say:

    And, Quackwatch

And, from Memorial Sloan and Kettering they warn about the products safety in humans with diabetes and that the product may intefere with radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

    “MANGOSTEEN (Garcinia mangostana L.)
    CLINICAL SUMMARY
Despite claims by several marketers, the efficacy and safety of mangosteen products for cancer treatment in humans have not been established. Mangosteen is a plant native to Southeast Asia. The fruits are used in traditional medicine to treat skin infections, wounds, and diarrhea. Recent studies have revealed that xanthones from the fruit hulls exhibit antibacterial (3), antifungal (4), and antiinflammatory (5) properties. Alpha-mangostin, a xanthone, inhibited growth of leukemia HL60 cells (1) (6), reduced the synthesis of prostaglandins (5), and prevented oxidative damage of LDL (7) in vitro. There is also preliminary evidence that alpha- and gamma-mangostins act as histamine and serotonin receptor blockers (8), and also inhibit HIV-1 protease (9). Garcinone E, another xanthone, exerts cytotoxic effects against hepatocellular carcinoma cells (10). Extract from the pericarp of mangosteen has antiproliferative, antioxidative, and apoptotic effects against breast cancer SKBR3 cells (11). However, there is no data from clinical trials to verify these effects in humans. Mangosteen products may interfere with certain chemotherapeutic drugs. Diabetic patients should use mangosteen juice with caution due to the sugar content.

    SCIENTIFIC NAME

    Garcinia mangostana L.

    ALSO KNOWN AS

Numerous brand names. XanGo is a dietary supplement that contains Garcinia mangostana and other fruit juices. But it is not synonymous with the mangosteen fruit.

    PURPORTED USES

    Bacterial Infections

    Diarrhea

    Fungal infections

    Inflammation

    Skin infections

    Wound healing

    CONSTITUENTS

    · Xanthones: alpha-mangostin, beta-mangostin, gamma-mangostin, garcinone B, garcinone E

    · Mangostinone

    · Tannins

    · Flavonoid: epicatechin

    (1)(2)

    MECHANISM OF ACTION
The xanthones, alpha- and beta-mangostins, and garcinone B exhibit strong inhibitory effect against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro (3). Alpha-mangostin has been shown to inhibit growth of leukemia HL60 cells by inducing caspase-3-dependent apoptosis (1) (6), reduce the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting the activities of COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes (5), and prevent oxidative damage of LDL by functioning as a free-radical scavenger (7). Alpha- and gamma-mangostins also antagonize the activities of histamine and serotonin by acting as receptor blockers (8). Garcinone E has cytotoxic effects against hepatocellular carcinoma cells (10). In vitro studies have also demonstrated that a crude methanolic extract from the pericarp of mangosteen has antiproliferative, antioxidative, and apoptotic effects against SKBR3 breast cancer cells (11).

    WARNINGS
    · Several Mangosteen products are sold via a network marketing approach. There is no conclusive evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of mangosteen in treating cancer. Patients should consult their oncologists before using any supplements during cancer treatment.

    · Mangosteen products have antioxidant effects. They may interfere with the action of certain chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation therapy.

    · Due to the sugar content, diabetic patients should use mangosteen juice with caution.

    DRUG INTERACTIONS
Chemotherapeutic Agents: Mangosteen products have antioxidant effects (7) and may interfere with the action of anthracyclines, platinum compounds, and alkylating agents.

    LITERATURE SUMMARY AND CRITIQUE
There is no clinical data available to support the beneficial effects of mangosteen in humans.”

I’d be suspicious of multi-level marketing schemes which is the way this product is being promoted and sold.

A chiropractor friend told me about it after his girlfriend used it as alternative therapy in leu of radiation or chemo. She said with what she seen other loved ones go through on the chemo, she honestly would have rather died from cancer than to go through HECK and back.
It has helped me a lot with my arthritis (got me off the pain killers, I wish i knew about this when taking the vioxx.) It just goes to show that even if something DOES go through clinical trials, like PANDA is talking about, that DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN IT IS GOING TO BE SAFE. In fact, if with HUNDREDS of years of folklore, people actually using a food for medicinal purposes in areas where there aren’t even ANY PHARMACIES, PRESCRIPTIONS AROUND, im not going to WAIT 3 to 5 years for some clinical or double blind study to come around. I am prepared to “take what they are taking, like i said for hundreds of years”.

Another thing there HAS been research done on this fruit. May i mention that the ones that did the research were INDEPENDENT UNIVERSITIES AND RESEARCH FACILITIES, ones where there was not at all a special interest in the results. Many cases their ONLY motive was to see just WHY THIS FRUIT DID WHAT IT DID FOR SO MANY PEOPLE.
In fact if you look at the date on a lot of the studies, the studies actually took place BEFORE JOE MORTON (from the original company to market the mangosteen juice to the rest of the world). So how could this company “sway” some of the studies, or influence them (can’t tell me we don’t have that with todays drug companies!!!!!) here is a video you MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OUT that gives more truth to the reality of this fruit

HERE is an abstract of one the studies DIRECT from medical journals of the NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE site – (search MANGOSTEEN and XANTHONE) now when you read that abstract, NOTE THE LAST LINE

    here is the FULL study:

HERE are some facts to prove that natural medicine should be taken more seriously:

why is it that over 75 percent of the world use natural sources for medicine?

why is it despite over 3 billion prescriptions being written every year, the lead killers are STILL cancer, heart attack, diabetes, and stroke?

did you know just as many people die each DAY from drug reaction as an AIRLINER crashing (288 per day). Now that is with the doctor CORRECTLY prescribing it and the patient taking it AS PRESCRIBED. Now if an airplane crashed every day, there would be panic, airline boycotts, lawsuits, congressional committies, NTSB regulation changes,… SOMETHING WOULD GET DONE… well we have an equivilant killer, but many people just turn their head because major pharmaceutical companies have such a strong influence on americans (and doctors too) that they believe the ONLY way to get relief from something is to POP A PILL.

We are the highest spending nation on health care in the world… then WHY DO WE ONLY RANK 57TH out of over 170 countries when it comes to overall health / disease percentages???

I don’t know if it is just me or is natural medicine being given the cold shoulder just because pharm companies wont profit?

In summary, I would STRONGLY recommend trying the juice. I don’t know if you have someone to get it from but if not you can get 2 free cs here… mention my name and you will get 2 free cases… THAT IS THE CONFIDENCE WE HAVE IN THIS PRODUCT

    PANDA… i have a question?
you know the phrase AN APPLE A DAY KEEPS THE DENTIST AWAY?

Well basically that suggest that, as it does for many people, help their teeth, hence KEEP THE DENTIST AWAY.

Now according to what you are saying, you SHOULD NOT BOTHER TO EAT THAT APPLE… because…. THERE HAVE BEEN NO KNOWN CLINICAL TRIALS ON THE APPLE…

that is pretty much what you said. like the DavidLee guy said, if so many people have used the apple (in this case the mangosteen) to help successfully keep their teeth up to par (or in this case help with controlling cancer, or also easing effects of chemo when it is used), then why, just because a clinical or double blind study has not been done on the performance of the apple (in this case mangosteen), would you honestly wait 3 or 5 years just to even GIVE IT A TRY???

Even when a drug does get clinically tested and “approved” for use, how do you really know it is not going to be recalled in 5 to 10 years or even a few months after taking it and they say SORRY THIS CAN BE BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH? You never know for sure until ITS TOO LATE.

but people have been taking this fruit for centuries (like davidlee said, this was even BEFORE the mangosteen company (im not going to say it because i don’t want comment getting pulled, but we know what one it is) im just simply bringing up a few good points

but anyways yes, i would suggest strongly for your sister to take the mangosteen juice to help with her energy.

oh yes, here is a simple non company site that has testimonies shared so even though no clinical trial has been done on the fruit, you can see that it does change lives, and you will see why it is going to be a $billion company much faster than microsoft. That could ONLY happen because it is working for people.

god bless and I will pray for your sister!!
    In christ,
    Robert

I do accept IM or email if you just have any questions or like information

a word that was mentioned about the network marketing… not all companies are bad… infact avon, tupperware, mary kay, etc are all like such companies.
did you know that bottled water, and even, yes, Aloe Vera (introduced by forever living products) was brought to the world through word of mouth marketing.

It is simply marketing made sense. Basically instead of a company borrowing millions of dollars up front for tv ads, radio and magazine ads, and THEN sit back and hope they at least have enough to cover what was borrowed, what network marketing companies do instead is give the CUSTOMERS their advertising budget (about 50 %, at least for our company, maybe less for others).

If you ever went to a movie and liked it, what do you do … you TELL YOUR FRIENDS.. “HEY YOU GOT TO SEE THIS” and so they do…. but does Miramax studios, or even the theater send you a check for a buck or two for referring your friends to them? no. these companies do.

people are going to trust a friend better than a billboard or tv ad. And in this case, i use this juice too to keep my blood sugar as a controllable level. (i took it in small portions first, just to let my body adjust), then it got to the point where it worked on a molecular level, basically this juice doesn’t “cure stuff” but helps your body to basically “help itself”.

I also use it for energy as well. I don’t know much of the science like david seemed to here, but you know what, it worked for me, and just because there is no clinical trial doesn’t mean that if i see someone that could use this juice, that I am going to NOT share it with him.. I would be doing them in INJUSTICE.

So in a sense, I am not going to tell you NOT to use it. All i know is juice is a blessing for me

  6. Notyour B Says:

No objection as such for using this at this stage.

However, do consult with her oncologist if she has chemotherapy to know the possible risks of drug interaction. Some compounds can interfere/make chemo side-effects worse. She should not be afraid of asking questions from ANYONE who is proposing treatment. A good doctor does his level best to answer questions.

Also do check for pricing. Mangosteen juice and other supplements are often sold way beyond their value, with NO control over contents (most supplements contain a very feeble amount of the said juice, and is mostly grape/apple or other ordinary fruit juice; you dont want to be paying a fortune for 1mL mangosteen juice diluted in 1L apple juice when you can get the actual fruit cheaper and make your own fresh juice!).

Above all beware extravagant promises & testimonies. The fact that you are asking that question indicates that you are doing just that. Hope is good, but false hope often does more harm than good, especially if it makes somebody reject a treatment which could have prolonged life.

  7. oncogenomics Says:

I don’t think anyone will argue with drinking mangosteen juice as a source of nutrition. However, there no evidence that mangosteen juice has any effectiveness against cancer. In addition, any “one size fits all” cure for cancer is plain false because like the common cold, it is not one disease. Cancer is a term for the rapid uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. A generic term for a symptom. Each specific set of genetic mutations and the cells affected is a separate disease. Each different cancer would have a different cure though some may be similar enough to have the same cure.
